Washington Capitals

Cristobal Huet

Huet was traded to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a second round pick, reports the AP. This deal clouds the goaltending picture in Washington considerably, as Huet will now battle with Olaf Kolzig for starts. It's still unclear who will emerge as the winner, but our opinion is that Huet will probably come out of all this with slightly more value than the aging Kolzig. Brent Johnson meanwhile becomes absolutely worthless as he is now a third stringer. Over in Montreal, Carey Price takes over full-time reigns and is a must-start in almost all fantasy leagues. He'll be backed up by unproven Jaroslav Halak, which should make many Habs fans nervous.

Alexander Ovechkin

Just in case you hadn't noticed, Alexander Ovechkin had 4 goals and 5 points last night. He is the #1 player in fantasy now and his stock has never been higher. He is currently on pace for an astounding 67 goals with 110 points total. Where is the ceiling on this kid? 80 goals? 125 points? I'd like to hear your thoughts!

Brent Johnson

Johnson will miss 2-4 weeks with sprained knee ligaments, reports the Washington Post. The Capitals will promote a goalie from their minor league affiliate team later today but whoever it is will have almost zero fantasy value even with Johnson sidelined. Olaf Kolzig figures to carry the entire load in net for the next few weeks.

Nicklas Backstrom

Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres. The former fourth overall pick has put up 7 points in his last 5 games, while averaging over 21 minutes per game and will continue to thrive as long as he centers superstar Alexander Ovechkin. If for some reason Backstrom is available in your league, pick him up.

Tom Poti

Poti missed his third straight game on Monday due to a groin injury, reports TSN. The injury is not considered serious and Poti remains day-to-day. One of Hockeyinformer.com's pre-season sleepers, Poti is still someone to keep an eye on as he has the ability to score in the 50-point range if all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

Alexander Semin

Semin is expected to return to the Capitals lineup Wednesday against the Lightning, reports the Washington Post. He has recovered from an injured right ankle but still feels some temporary discomfort. Unless he wakes up this morning in terrible shape, expect the Russian sniper to be in the lineup.

Alexander Semin

Semin aggravated his ankle injury during Saturday's victory over the Hurricanes and did not make the trip to New York, reports the Washington Post. It is unclear exactly how long he will be sidelined.

Brent Johnson

Johnson sparkled during the preseason and is apparently feeling the best he's ever felt during his career, reports the Washington Post. He re-dedicated himself over the summer and has undergone a lifestyle change both of which contributed to a sparkling preseason. After appearing in 30 games last year, the plan for this season is to slightly increase that workload as 17 sets of back-to-back games are scheduled and #1 goalie Olaf Kolzig is now 37 years old. Despite that, we still don't think Johnson has much value in fantasy leagues.
