2007/2008 NHL Fantasy Goalie Rankings
Submitted by Hockeyinformer on September 27, 2007 - 12:27am.Here are Hockeyinformer's goalie rankings for the 2007/2008 NHL season. While we have ranked most of the top goalies in the league, we have also taken the liberty to break them down into tiers as we feel at times it may be important to know which goalies share similar value and which are in a distinctly inferior group.
Tier One
1. Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks - Finished runnerup for the Vezina and the Hart in his first season with the Canucks and deservedly so as he backstopped the team to a division title while contributing a career high 47 wins...was equally as strong in the playoffs and probably would have garnered top goalie honors had he overcome his slow start last season...that shouldn't be a problem this time around...
2. Miikka Kiprusoff - Calgary Flames - Wasn't as sharp as this season before but was able to manage a second consecutive 40-win season...durable, consistent and still in his prime, he should easily challenge for the Vezina trophy barring disaster...also is usually among the league leaders in all major goalie categories - including shutouts - which makes him arguably the safest pick around...
3. Martin Brodeur, New Jersey Devils - Recorded an NHL record 48 wins and his third Vezina trophy in the last four years, though he seemed wear down over the season's final month and into the playoffs...probably won't play in 78 games like he did last year and with the Devils defense suffering another loss in Brian Rafalski, he'll be hard pressed to match last year's totals...
Tier Two
4. Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Anaheim Ducks - Posted arguably the best season of his career and capped it all off with some splendid play en route to the Stanley Cup...while he has a good chance of matching all his stats from last year, a post-Cup letdown, the security of a new contract and his injury prone nature are three factors that could negatively impact his worth.
5. Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks - Bounced back from injury and fended off the challenge from Vesa Toskala to record 25 wins and 7 shutouts...was sensational in the playoffs and has the reigns all to himself again as management has continually shipped off his competition over the years...will come undervalued in most leagues this year so by all means make him a priority...
6. Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres - Suffered a couple hiccups along the way to a career and franchise-high 40 wins while playing equally as strong in the playoffs...will come severely undervalued in almost all fantasy leagues by virtue of his pedestrian goals-against-average and save percentage...make no mistake about it though - he could easily vault into the top five...
7. Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers - Appeared headed for a forgettable sophomore season, but turned it on over the season's second half to prove that his rookie year was no fluke...absolutely no competition in sight as the Rangers' main man in net so he'll be one of the more busier netminders around...certainly capable of improving upon his third place Vezina trophy showing...
8. Marty Turco, Dallas Stars - Posted his third consecutive 35-win season and trails only Brodeur and Kiprusoff in wins in that span...consistency is sometimes an issue and his save percentage often takes a beating as a result...shouldn't be challenged as yet by Mike Smith, but his leash isn't quite as long as some of his peers...
9. Dominik Hasek, Detroit Red Wings - Ageless wonder managed to stay healthy for the entire season and was among the leaders in several important goalie categories...value takes a hit due to the fact that the Wings will probably stay away from playing him back-to-back and thus limiting his ceiling at about 65 games...turns 43 halfway through the year but Father Time has yet to come knocking...
10. Ray Emery, Ottawa Senators - Wrestled away the #1 job from Martin Gerber and never looked back en route to a career high 33 wins and 5 shutouts...athletic and sometimes impatient, he's more of an injury risk than others in his class...can't fall into any prolonged slumps or injuries as Gerber is still around and hungry for another chance at redemption...
11. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins - Finally delivered on his enormous potential by appearing in 67 games and posting a career high 43 wins which was tied for third overall in the league...only 22 and continuing to improve in all facets of the game, he'll still face an occasional bump in the road over the course of the season...may be left to fend for himself and you'll see the result in his stats...
Tier Three
12. Nicklas Backstrom, Minnesota Wild - Led the league in both goals-against-average and save percentage in a magical NHL debut...his performance awarded him a new contract and afforded management to trade Manny Fernandez...has the reigns all to himself, but the unorthodox Jacques Lemaire is still his coach, so proceed with some caution...
13. Kari Lehtonen, Atlanta Thrashers - Battled a severe case of inconsistency and was often benched in favor of veteran Johan Hedberg...wasn't impressive in his playoff debut, leading some to believe that he was worked way too hard early in the season...not only does a lighter workload loom, but he'll probably always be looking over his shoulder to Hedberg all year long...
14. Tomas Vokoun, Florida Panthers - A thumb injury not only prevented him from recording a career season, it probably also cost him his job as the Predators' #1 goalie as management found him expendable on the heels of Chris Mason's heroics...shipped off to Florida and faces no challengers there...don't write him off just yet as the Panthers are continually improving...
15. Cam Ward, Carolina Hurricanes - Struggled in his first season as full-time starter but wasn't fully to blame as the Canes lost several prominent blueliners...has reportedly re-dedicated himself over the summer and is said to be in the best shape of his life...Canes should make the playoffs and Ward seems poised to breakthrough and lead them there...
16. Cristobal Huet, Montreal Canadiens - Endured a tumultuous campaign as a result of a serious hamstring injury around mid-season...workload his been light the last two years but has proven himself to be not just a flash-in-the-pan...could end up being the best bargain among all the league's goalies...
17. Martin Biron, Philadelphia Flyers - Finally given a ticket out of Buffalo after several hot-and-cold seasons...scripted a decent debut in Philadelphia considering the circumstances but more will be expected this year...only place to go is up...
18. Rick DiPietro, New York Islanders - Caught in all the chaos of last season was the breakthrough of former first overall pick who posted a career-high 32 wins and led his team to the playoffs...still a plethora of untapped potential, he'll be in line for at least 65 games barring injury...the team around him is worse and his stats will show it...
Tier Four
19. Chris Mason, Nashville Predators - Management was confident in his abilities to the point where veteran Tomas Vokoun was shipped out...the Predators are in for a more challenging year and the pressure will be on...
20. Vesa Toskala, Toronto Maple Leafs - Has proved himself to be starter worthy over the past two seasons and finally has the best opportunity of his career...capable Andrew Raycroft is there to challenge so could find himself in another goalie rotation before long...
21. Manny Legace, St. Louis Blues - Proved many doubters wrong with a sparkling run around mid-season before knee surgery cut his season short...seemed to thrive when coach Andy Murray took over...Hannu Toivonen poses a mild challenge, but the odds favor a 25-win season...
22. Peter Budaj, Colorado Avalanche - Severely outplayed Jose Theodore and was awarded the official #1 designation by Christmas...was even better down the stretch and did all he could to try and squeeze the Avs into the playoffs...goes into the season as the #1 goalie, but fantasy leaguers best tread with caution as Theodore is still around...
23. Dwayne Roloson, Edmonton Oilers - Arguably the sole bright spot on an otherwise pathetic Oilers team...posted a career-high 27 wins but also a career-high 34 losses...always seem to have something left in the tank, but faces a capable challenger in Mathieu Garon who will inevitably steal some starts...
24. Olaf Kolzig, Washington Capitals - Once again provided heroic performances despite the fact that his stats didn't show it...ididn't improve too much in the wins department, but save percentage and goals-against-average both showed significant gains...is 37 and can't assume the same workload as some of his counterparts...a good #3 goalie for fantasy teams...
25. Nikolai Khabibulin, Chicago Blackhawks - Improved leaps and bounds in his second season with the Hawks but was still prone to periods of inconsistency...is no longer the elite goalie he was earlier in the decade, but is still capable of showing flashes of brilliance...the Hawks are only marginally improved, so best to stay away...
Tier Five
26. Manny Fernandez, Boston Bruins - Endured a trying and injury-filled campaign...gets a fresh start in Boston, but must prove his worth all over again...
27. Marc Denis, Tampa Bay Lightning - Bombed badly in his debut in Tampa Bay, eventually losing both his confidence and his job as the team's starter...is apparently much improved if training camp news is to believed and will once again be given the chance to succeed...high-risk, high-reward...
28. Johan Holmqvist, Tampa Bay Lightning - Inconsistency was once again the tale of the Lighting goalie and he only marginally outplayed Marc Denis...is far from a lock to see regular action this season...
29. Johan Hedberg, Atlanta Thrashers - Filled in admirably for Kari Lehtonen when needed and was effective in stringing together several strong games in a row...is in line for more starts...but is clearly second fiddle to Lehtonen...
30. Pascal Leclaire, Columbus Blue Jackets - Suffered through yet another injury prone season which limited him to only a handful of appearances down the stretch...has the talent to be ranked much higher...but injuries and Fredrik Norrena stand in the way...
31. Jose Theodore, Colorado Avalanche - Former Hart and Vezina trophy continued to perform at a shadow of his former self...bombed badly to start the season and eventually lost his job before recovering somewhat near season's end...will start the season banged up...an important year if he wishes to resurrect his career...
32. David Aebischer, Phoenix Coyotes - Progressively worsened as the season wore on, eventually losing the starter's role and the backup...jettisoned out of Montreal and into the fire that is Phoenix where he will at least be assured of consistent starts...considering the team, don't expect much at all...
