From the interview...
Q: Is Ty Conklin looking like a lock to replace Dany Sabourin as the other goalkeeper on this team once Marc-Andre Fleury returns?
MOLINARI: No, and that isn't likely to change, even if Conklin continues to play well.
He was brought up from the Penguins' farm team in Wilkes-Barre on emergency recall after Fleury got a high ankle sprain Dec. 6 in Calgary, and thus did not have to clear waivers. If the Penguins would want to keep him after Fleury returns to active duty, Conklin would have to go on waivers and, based on the way he's performed lately, there's a decent chance someone would claim him because a reliable veteran goaltender is a good asset to have.
What's more, Fleury and Sabourin are on one-way contracts, and the Penguins don't figure to have much interest in carrying three goalies on their major-league roster, or in paying Sabourin an NHL salary to play for the Baby Penguins. That's particularly true because, when Fleury gets back into game shape, he's a good bet to start a decided majority of the remaining games unless he completely fizzles, and management won't be inclined to pay big-league salaries to two guys who are getting limited, or no, work at this level.
Continuing to perform the way he has during the past couple of weeks wouldn't be without its rewards for Conklin, though. He certainly would earn appreciation as one of the franchise's unsung heroes of 2007-08 and, more important, would make himself an even more attractive target for prospective employers when he becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season.
