Last summer, Predators general manager David Poile had to strip several key players off his team to save money on salary. This year the team has new ownership committed to keeping Nashville's young talent from leaving. Want proof? Start with the seven-year, $31.5 million contract handed out to forward Martin Erat in the longest and most expensive deal yet for this franchise.

The Pittsburgh Penguins got back into a game that looked hopelessly lost by replacing the more physical Jarkko Ruutu with the faster Max Talbot at center Jordan Staal's line. Staal, adjusting on the fly to a new linemate, scored twice in 11 minutes of the third period as the Penguins cut a three-goal deficit to one goal before losing 4-2 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night.

The Carolina Hurricanes know their coach will be back next season. They're still waiting to find out whether two of their aging defensemen will join him. General manager Jim Rutherford said Friday that the team would retain coach Peter Laviolette, who in 2006 led the Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup.

Evgeni Malkin could have talked with friends, enjoyed a dinner out, played video games or watched television. Whatever he did Friday, it wasn't at the hockey rink. While the Flyers practiced at their suburban Philadelphia rink for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, Malkin, Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins enjoyed a day off.

The Detroit Red Wings sound as if the Western Conference finals have lasted long enough. They're ready to eliminate the Dallas Stars on Saturday in Game 5 and earn a spot in the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since winning a title in 2002. "We want to finish them off as soon as we can," Detroit forward Tomas Holmstrom said Friday.

Kimmo Timonen's return from injury suddenly seems much closer than that of Philadelphia Flyers defense partner Braydon Coburn. The All-Star was all but ruled out for the season a week ago, on the eve of the Eastern Conference finals, when it was revealed he had a blood clot in his left ankle. But after a visit to his doctor Thursday, just hours before the Flyers extended their season with a 4-2...

Jacques Martin has reached an agreement to remain with the Florida Panthers as general manager through the 2011-12 season, the team said Friday. Martin was stripped of his duties as head coach last month but said he would stay on as general manager. He said then the two jobs were too much for one person.

Not only did the Philadelphia Flyers stay alive Thursday night, they got good news on the status of injured defensemen Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn. Philadelphia's top defense pair could be reunited as early as Sunday for Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals in Pittsburgh. Coburn seemed close to returning Thursday night for the Flyers' 4-2 home win, but needed more time to heal from facial...

A fast start by the Philadelphia Flyers gave way to a very nervous ending. When it was over, they were still alive and happily facing what many figured was an unlikely return trip to Pittsburgh. Joffrey Lupul scored the first of Philadelphia's three first-period goals Thursday night and the Flyers extended the Eastern Conference finals for at least one more game with a 4-2 victory over the...

Marty Turco has quite an opportunity in front of him. The Dallas goalie is 0-9-2 in the NHL at Joe Louis Arena, where he will have a chance to stop nagging questions and extend the Western Conference finals against the Detroit Red Wings. "It's nothing short of an exciting challenge for all of us, and for me personally," the former University of Michigan star said after helping the Stars stave off...

NHL playoff goal-scoring leader Johan Franzen will miss his fourth straight game when the Red Wings face Dallas in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Saturday. Maybe it was payback, maybe it was just good fortune. The Dallas Stars aren't going to quibble. All that matters is Tomas Holmstrom's rear end -- and possibly his reputation -- cost the Detroit Red Wings a goal and the Stars took full advantage, avoiding the humiliation of getting swept out of the Western Conference finals.

A little more than two years ago, coach Michel Therrien -- 11 games into his tenure behind the Pittsburgh Penguins bench -- ripped his club for its evident indifference to defense. And he doesn't have to worry about where his future will be.
